This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our project aims to address a critical issue: the reading proficiency gap among 4th and 5th-grade students reading two or more years below their grade level. This gap not only hinders academic progress but also impacts their confidence and future opportunities. By focusing on reading intervention, we can make a profound difference in these students' lives.
Our project targets this vulnerable group, providing tailored interventions to bridge the gap and bring them up to grade level.
Beyond academic achievement, our initiative prioritizes building confidence and fostering a love for reading. Many struggling readers experience feelings of frustration and inadequacy, which can lead to disengagement from school and a negative attitude towards learning. By nurturing their self-esteem and instilling a passion for reading, we empower these students to unlock their full potential and succeed in all areas of life.
Moreover, addressing reading difficulties at an early stage is crucial for long-term success. Research shows that students who struggle with reading in elementary school are at a higher risk of academic underachievement, behavioral issues, and even dropping out later on.
