My Students
Imagine an oasis of art in a city, populated by students from every socioeconomic group, every background, every creative interest. That is my school, an arts magnet school that attracts students from every borough of NYC to pursue visual art, music, dance, and theater. For four years they take both studio classes and academics to graduate with a diploma and a special designation for pre-professional training in the arts.
Though they may be destined for Broadway or MoMA, English is not necessarily their strong suit.
I strive to create a class environment that is routinized, but flexible, academically rigorous, but still creative. It helps to have a variety of resources to do that - books to differentiate instruction, a projector, and document camera to show lessons, movies, and art. The students challenge me to innovate, to get creative and to make the esoteric laws of reading and writing accessible.
My Project
Teenagers feel everything and feel it deeply. The density and power of poetry is perfect to hook them on reading and writing. I need to refresh my poetry library with anthologies and volumes by a variety of authors.
Offering an array of voices (African-American, Asian-American, Latino, LGBT) ensures my students feel seen and connect with the universal themes in poetry.
I've selected a variety of poetry books that will get them reading and help them find their own interests and styles. In class, they will have time to peruse the library, find poems they love, copy them in their notebook, and emulate them. They will also pick one poet and do a deep dive into this poet's work to produce an anthology, presentation or display for their peers.
