11 hours! When I come to work I remind myself of the 11 hours some of my students spend at school. I think of the long commutes they take to get across the city, the resources they still need, and the determination they bring to the classroom every day.
Working in a low-income/high poverty school I have learned of the numerous challenges facing my students.
My school has a very diverse student body. The students at my school come from all areas of the district to receive a quality education. Our school depends on the support of our community and the resources of the city to enrich learning. We use our community leaders as tools for learning and our city as a gateway to explore history. Help my inventive students receive all the support they deserve.
My Project
In my classroom, we are building a love for reading. We have time to work on spelling, read texts and articles to build fluency, comprehension and reading strategies. We also have time to read books independently, with a partner and simply listen to a story. By reading and listening we are expanding our vocabulary, knowledge and creativity. To ensure the literacy block continues to expand student learning we need some additional supplies.
The magazine subscriptions and privacy shields will help support the entire second grade during our literacy block.
Students love to explore new information to build their literacy skills and expand their knowledge. With a focus on reading informational texts, we are hoping to receive subscriptions to Scholastic News and Time for Kids. These monthly articles will provide our entire grade with new culturally diverse information. These articles will help students develop ways to identify text information and provide real life details connected to our curriculum. The privacy shields will also support students during the literacy block by proving them with the option of additional privacy to focus.
