This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of 55 fifth graders in a general education class, with students with IEP and ELL learners and special education students such as autism.

A typical day in my classroom looks active.

My students are engaged in learning activities that get them moving, talking to their peers, and asking great questions. You will not see a lot of worksheets in my classroom. My students are learning through hands-on experiences.

I teach in a Title I school.

My fifth-grade students come from very diverse families. I am excited to share that my school is a genuinely diverse community. Not only do students come from varying ethnic backgrounds and places, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. My scholars are creative, thoughtful, and full of excitement!

My students are 9 and 10-year children that love coming to school. When school was closed in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic not only were the kids wanting to come back but we missed seeing their smiling faces every day.

My Project

This project is Inspired by "A Bit of Engineering for the Global Goals" From Ms. Imhoff project. Engaging students in an engineering or computer or data science activity and explore how these STEM subjects can advance solutions for the United Nations Global Goals. students will get to use Micro-Bits while learning about the United Nations Global Goals "14: Life on Land" and "15: Life Below Water."

Connecting computer science to service-learning is a powerful engagement tool, especially for girls.

This is evident in the IF/THEN Collection. I will engage students by showing them clips of how Flor Larson uses computer science to keep our country safe and how Natalie Evans-Harris uses computer programming to bring together a diversity of thoughts and opinions. I think the interview with Afua Bruce when she says she uses "technology and data science to improve community and in service of humanity" will resonate with students who want to make a difference but may have never considered a STEM career.

I want my girls to research and create projects motivated by innovative women who made their mark in science, technology, engineering and math. I am planning lots of activities and projects for them to create slide shows, presentations, and doing lots of research on the questions that they undoubtedly come up with during the course of the year. I want them to be able to purchase the materials they need for their presentations. It makes things so much more real for them to actually be able to touch and hold something. I will like to provide my students with gifts cards to buy materials needed for their presentation, table stands, Exacto knife, felt, glue dots, Microbit, erasers, Women In Science Books, and circuit tape and little bits of science kit to empower girls in tech.
