Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a Title I school in the South Bronx. The students are very diverse; we are a mix of African-American, Latino and some new arrivals from the Middle East and Africa. The school goes from Pre-K to fifth grade and over 95% percent receive free lunch.

The students in my classroom are all special needs students.

I am the IEP teacher for grades 3K-5th. They all have individual educational plans (IEPs). They vary in their needs from learning disabilities to social-emotional needs.

When planning classroom activities and conducting assessments, I keep IEP goals and outcomes in mind. I also keep the IEP in mind to determine how to collect and evaluate student progress toward educational goals.

My Project

We often hear about the STEM gender gap. Why are there so few women interested in science, technology, engineering and math? A child's interest in STEM is greatly influenced by stereotypes and cultural norms. We need to expose our students to positive female role models, making a difference in STEM careers.

"Science is not a boy's game, it's not a girl's game: It's everyone's game" - Nichelle Nichols

I want my girls to research and create projects motivated by innovative women who made their mark in science, technology, engineering and math. I am planning lots of activities and projects for them to create slide shows, presentations, and doing lots of research on the questions that they undoubtedly come up with during the course of the year. I want them to not only have access to their work in a digital sense but also a hard copy. It makes things so much more real for them to actually be able to touch and hold something.

This new printer would be the key to unlocking their potential in creativeness in science and math.

It is capable of printing the day to day stories and assignments that they create on their iPads and school computers.

When I ask my students to write, I want them to feel like they will have that finished product to take home and share with their families.

That is such a crucial and motivating element for my students. They love seeing that finished product coming out of the printer.
