My Project

This project is designed to strengthen the writing skills and language comprehension of high school students with disabilities through the daily use of mentor sentences in our special education resource room. By analyzing, imitating, and applying high-quality sentence structures drawn from diverse, engaging literature, students will develop a deeper, more practical understanding of grammar, syntax, and writing style.

Students in our program face unique challenges with written expression, often struggling with grammar, organization, and clarity due to learning disabilities, ADHD, or autism.

Traditional grammar instruction can feel disconnected and abstract, especially for students who need more explicit and scaffolded teaching approaches. Mentor sentences offer a research-backed, inclusive method of instruction that ties grammar directly to real reading and writing experiences, promoting both accessibility and engagement.

To successfully implement this project and meet students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals, we are seeking support for basic classroom materials that will allow students to interact with the content in a hands-on, meaningful way.

These supplies include:

- Headphones and cases for focused audio access to texts and recordings, helping students with attention or sensory needs.

- Pens for daily writing and sentence imitation activities.

- Grammar posters to visually reinforce key concepts and structures.

- Dry-erase markers and erasers for interactive practice and whole-class modeling.

- Candy rewards to positively reinforce participation, effort, and growth.

With your help, we can provide students with the tools they need to build confidence and see themselves as capable, creative writers. Your support will bring an engaging, evidence-based writing strategy into the hands of learners who need it most.
