Empowering Diverse Learners With Flexible Seating

My students need alternative seating options such as flex space cushions, wobble chairs, and a low table to foster a comfortable and flexible learning environment.

My Students

My second-grade students represent a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. I teach 46 students in a two-way dual language immersion program. They spend half their day learning in Spanish and the other half learning in English. Almost 40% of the students come from low-income families and face many challenges. They are a smart group of students with different interests, goals, and abilities. Most importantly, they love learning in two languages.

Through meaningful learning experiences, students are learning to be bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate.

My students are motivated to be independent learners. There are students who need extra support to reach their full potential. In our class, we take the time to celebrate each other in all that we learn.

My Project

Research suggests that having student choice increases student engagement, productivity, and learning. Providing students with a variety of seating options is one way of offering student choice while creating an inviting and comfortable learning environment. Currently, my students have few options on where they decide to work which are: at different desks/tables with traditional classroom chairs, sitting or laying on the floor, or under tables. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them to learn.

Students feel empowered and motivated when they have a choice in their learning experience.

Adding flex space cushions, wobble chairs/stools, and a low table will promote students to make effective learning choices. These seating options will allow students to continue developing and using essential skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. Giving students the opportunity to get moving will help students that are active to stay focused and engaged. These flexible seating options will help ALL of my diverse learners thrive in our classroom.
