Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are motivated to learn, but like all learners, need to feel empowered to "go beyond" simply meeting the standards. The students I support are majority Title I (free/reduced-price lunch) recipients.
Many of my students also come from families that work extremely hard, with parents that sacrifice family time, because they have to work two to three jobs just to make ends meet.
Because of this, many of these students also take part in our after-school programs that run well into the evening.
My Project
The two Sphero robots will allow my students to work on 21st-century skills, including computational thinking and developing a debugging mindset, which are essential future-ready skills. Having exposure to robotics has proven to be beneficial in strengthening critical thinking, which can lead to better performance in mathematics and science related courses. Leveling the playing field by engaging my students in robotics is crucial to my work.
We have begun leveraging robots in our newscasts, and these Spheros, which will be coded using Chromebooks, can be used for our students to introduce additional robotics and computational thinking concepts to their current and future projects.
In addition, the requested Chromebooks will be leveraged for collaborative project development and for the block coding required to use the Sphero robotics.
Furthermore, my students are planning to branch out to the rest of our school community. For example, our plan is to have enough robots on campus to begin hosting "Robotics/Coding Nights" to stakeholders in our community.
My students have already devised a plan to begin introducing robotics as a professional learning opportunity for staff members. Imagine that! Students teaching their teachers how to code! This could be not only a chance to change my students' lives, but also an opportunity to change the lives of some of our teachers and the way they think about leveraging robots with their own students.
