This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The Spanish Dual Language Program at my school has only been in place for a little over 4 years, resulting in a limited selection of Spanish texts for our Dual Language students. Acquiring Esperanza Rising (Esperanza renace) and The House on Mango Street (La casa en mango street) will help us create a more comprehensive classroom library and introduce culturally relevant materials that resonate with our students' experiences in our target language. Each year, our class reads a different book (for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade), but currently, we do not have a full set of any titles. This means students often have to share books, making it difficult for them to take them home to complete assignments or catch up on missed reading.
These culturally relevant book sets will give students the freedom to find their own space while reading in the classroom and allow them to take the books home for further engagement.
By providing our native and emerging Spanish students with culturally relevant texts like Esperanza renace and La casa en mango street, we can help them expand their Spanish repertoire while engaging them with texts they'll feel connected to. These books will help my students explore their identities and the experiences of people in our community.
