Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is composed of 60 students which whom I work with in small groups as an Academic Services Intervention teacher. With dedicated and enthusiastic kindergartners, 2nd graders, 3rd graders, and 4th graders. My students are very hard workers and even though of their surroundings in their neighborhood my students come to class dedicated to work. They know that once they step in the classroom they are ready to work and learn new content. I love it when I see my students learn and apply what they have learned in the class and use it in their real life. My students are bright and enthusiastic students ready to learn. My class is located in a low income area. A large percentage of the student population qualifies for free lunch. My students are not provided with opportunities to experience new things. My students are bright and very dedicated students. My students need real life experiences in order to make real life connections. I would like to empower them and their culture to become emotionally and mentally well.
My Project
"We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens this community - and this nation." Cesar Chavez
Students learn through what us teachers tell them, but how relevant is the learning to them?
Sometimes it is difficult for a student to make a connection to what they are learning which is why I focus on culturally responsive instruction. Students become easily engaged and can make a connection to what they are learning. It is important for students to learn about history in the United States using different perspectives. It is important for students to learn through and instruction that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural reference to impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
This can be achieved by using a set of newspaper articles for the entire class to stay relevant of what is occurring in the world around them. This can be achieved having access to online a print several copies for students. In addition to this tool another important tool that will support their findings is using relevant information is paper to write and express themselves about what they have learned. In addition to this, another tool is cardstock that will allow them to write and draw how does the article connect to their real life experiences and how relevant is the article to their culture.
I believe in my students and their achievements and I value their different backgrounds. I take their backgrounds into consideration when providing instruction because I like to engage my students in their learning. I believe in my students making meaningful connections to the diverse backgrounds of their life while emphasizing a rigorous curriculum and high expectations for achievement.
