Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.” This quote from John Green conveys the power of books. Books open my students’ minds and hearts, transform their lives, broaden their perspectives, and help them develop empathy.
My students are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative.
Students at my school are book-loving, avid readers, and enthusiastic learners. As English language learners, books are so important to my students and are truly valued. I am the librarian at a K-8 elementary school in an impoverished urban area. Our school library is an essential resource for my students. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on our school library to check out high-quality books. Our school library supports our students’ inquiry and encourages students to explore and investigate the world through books.
My Project
I am requesting a collection of books that promote inclusion, multiculturalism, and diversity and will open my students’ eyes to an appreciation and understanding of others. This collection of books tell the stories of refugees, immigrants, Native Americans, and individuals who spoke out against intolerance. A majority of these books are picture books, an accessible format for students and teachers to read these books together and engage in discussions. I selected these books to expand our classroom themes of peace and tolerance.
Books can serve as mirrors and windows for my students.
It is important for my students to see themselves and their families in books, but it is also essential for my students to explore the diversity of our world. Learning about others is key in developing tolerance, acceptance, and empathy. This collection of books will allow my students to broaden their horizons, open their minds to new and different viewpoints, and promote social action to combat injustice.
