About My Students
Since our formation in 2010, we have promoted STEM throughout our community. With over 1,000 hours invested in outreach programs and events, the students have inspired generations of future STEM leaders. Our cooperation and communication with the community has created a foundation for innovation.
Our team motto — kulia i ka nu’u (strive for the summit)motivates our group to develop personal opportunities, deepen their skills base, and empower our rural community.
Our team’s diverse composition (balanced gender ratio, more than 12 different ethnic heritages, a majority of team economically disadvantaged, and some students with special education needs) empowers us to find innovative, effective, and creative solutions to a wide variety of problems.
Our students actively monitor, create projects, and complete the follow-up to all DonorsChoose.org projects as part of their education in project management. Each year a student coordinator is trained to be the point person for our projects and collects student ideas and work specifically for this portal.
Our students had the opportunity to visit the Google Liquid Galaxy in NYC. They were amazed by the immersive story telling. In looking at the project, I saw they could build collaboration, technical, project-management skills while building community sustainability content. Stories matter and our students should tell them with technology.
In Their Own Words
I want the students in our community to build conservation experiences. I think immersive 3D content of our forest, oceans, and reefs will help my peers and the community see what we have to lose by not acting in a sustainable way. Unfortunately, many of our natural resources are going away. This content maybe the only way that some future students will be able to experiences the beauty of Hawaii. Olivia L. 11th Grade
I am looking forward to learning alongside Google Engineers on how to take high resolution 3D video content and files and sync it with user-friendly vertical content. When I saw this at Google, I knew I wanted to build it. I think the construction will be fun, but I am most excited about learning how to split screen content and translate the 3D files into 14 screen immersions. It's a coders dream. Alex B. 9th Grade
I want to create a space we can be proud of that has world-class content using GIS information and student made explorations. Story-telling matters to me and I want to bring our storytelling to the 21st century. I love my home and I think others can experience our content around the world and learn to love the Big Island as well. Lisa L. 11th Grade
