My Project

I am excited to introduce the graphic novel "Displacement" by Kiku Hughes into my classroom as part of our reading curriculum. This compelling story not only captivates students with its vivid illustrations and engaging narrative but also addresses important themes of identity, history, and resilience that resonate deeply with my students at our Title I school in the Southwest region of the USA.

In our classroom, I plan to use "Displacement" to foster discussions around cultural identity and the historical context of Japanese American internment during World War II.

By reading this graphic novel, students will be encouraged to reflect on their own experiences of displacement and belonging, creating a safe space for sharing personal stories and perspectives.

To enhance comprehension and critical thinking, I will implement various interactive activities. For example, students will create visual storyboards that summarize key events and themes, helping them analyze the narrative structure and character development. Additionally, we will hold group discussions that encourage students to draw connections between the book's events and contemporary social justice issues, promoting empathy and understanding.

I also plan to integrate writing assignments where students express their thoughts on the book's themes, allowing them to articulate their understanding and personal reflections. By incorporating "Displacement" into our curriculum, I aim to not only improve literacy skills but also cultivate a more inclusive classroom environment where students feel valued and heard.
