I need to boost my instruction of writing by taking a professional development course, Effective Strategies to Improve Student Writing, and applying the strategies to my writing lessons.

My Students

My students are English language learners. I work with groups of students on developing language skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In addition to navigating rigorous curriculum the students need to navigate the new culture, a new city, and even new foods. During our class sessions we are working on content and language simultaneously, integrating arts in learning, and using technology to foster growth.

One of the most rewarding elements of my work is seeing students thrive in their mainstream classes, take on risks, and complete competitive projects.

This growth is possible with the choice of challenging activities that motivate the students and give them opportunities to transfer their skills from their native language into English.

My Project

I am planning to learn effective strategies for teaching writing and will apply them in the context of teaching English language learners to become successful writers.

Expressing your ideas clearly and effectively in writing is a skill that is necessary in all educational settings.

Yet, writing is the most difficult domain for my students. As I analyze their WIDA scores in writing, I see the need for improving the students' writing capacity. Teaching the students to be reflective writers and go through all the steps of the writing process diligently is the key to their success as writers. I believe this course will help me find and implement more effective strategies to empower students to be better writers.
