My Students

I am fortunate to work with some amazing students and educators daily in the middle school setting. Each day I get to ignite their curiosity for life while teaching 8th grade Science and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). I strive to address social and emotional needs while engaging them in the grade level curriculum as well as preparing them for their future in college and careers.

I teach at an inner city middle school where 60% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch and 36% are English Language Learners.

My students enjoy coming to school for both social and academic reasons. We have an amazing staff who support each and every student socially, emotionally, and academically. To able to do this, many of us spend our own money to support our students with basic supplies and individual professional development to explore relevant tools and materials.

My Project

I am looking to attend the EMPOWER Conference in August of 2019 with an awesome co-teacher and co-worker of mine. I have been in education for 3+ years and see daily the challenges that cause teacher burn-out leading to our current teacher shortage crisis. As an educator in an urban district, there are additional hurdles that impact the effectiveness of our curriculum instruction. I am constantly looking for innovative ways to engage and empower my students. In order to do this work, I need to remain up to date on resources and practices that are relevant to my students. The keynote speakers at this conference are known for their dynamic work and I hope to carry out their messages through my work.
