it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have the privilege of teaching 5th and 4th grade legends who are excited to be learning yoga and mindfulness practices. I run a yoga after school program in which we do a combination of bonding activities, mindfulness and meditation, movement, breathwork, and identity-affirming visual arts. Sadly, we are so under-resourced that everything outside of desks and some photocopy paper is the responsibility of the teachers or families to purchase or fundraise.
Bringing yoga blocks and art supplies into our kids' yoga will help every student in my class, no matter what their learning style or preference, find ways to calm their nervous system and build their self-confidence.
The children in our neighborhood are exposed to high levels of violence, addiction, and other traumatic events. They are working so hard to build healthy coping strategies and to break generational cycles. I know from personal experience how much yoga and art can help us manage our anger and anxiety.
Yoga blocks will help students in all different bodies access a variety of yoga poses safely. Crayons with a variety of skin tones will allow all of my students to see themselves represented and valued in the art they and their peers create. Watercolor paints are a very flexible and calming medium to work with and can produce dazzling effects painted over crayons, getting children excited to learn about the science behind it and to keep creating and experimenting. Isopropyl alcohol will help keep kids and teachers healthy during the cold and flu season and keep attendance rates and class participation high. To be eco- and budget-friendlier, we will use repurposed pieces of old clothes and towels instead of purchasing cleaning cloths. Thank you so much for helping my brilliant students heal and grow.
