it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The surge of technology and digital media in students' lives has made it more difficult than ever to focus on learning. More students than ever report that they feel disorganized, distracted, and disillusioned with secondary math courses. And more families in East Vegas today struggle to stay informed on their students' math performance while working to afford rising food, housing, and medical expenses.
This August, our eighth graders will embark on a new Pre-AP Algebra I course meant to overcome obstacles and set them on a path to future success in AP Calculus.
To overcome challenges we are planning a hands-on course with less distracting technology and greater emphasis on small groups, STEM manipulatives, notebooks, and math binders.
The binders requested in this project will become each student's central organization system for the five major units of the course. Students will organize their notes, homework, math labs, and assessment data in their binders which will be used for studying and for showcasing their learning to families and visitors. This system has been used to great success in our past interventions to both build confidence (students take pride in their completed work and growth data when it is more accessible to them and their families), and to build and spiral through long-term math knowledge (by organizing past learning for future reference).
