This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My high school is composed of an exceptionally diverse population of over 3,000 students with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of their parents speak a language other than English as their primary language; the majority receive free or reduced-price lunch, with one or both parents working full time. Our Mock Trial Varsity Team consists of nine members who compete on the high school circuit; our competition team consists of three attorneys and three witnesses on each side of the case (plaintiffs and defense).

Mock trial, as an extracurricular activity, helps students build skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and extemporaneous arguing, all of which will benefit them as they approach voting age and begin engaging with the law on a local national level.

My Project

This is an extracurricular trip for the Mock Trial Team. My students have been accepted into the Empire Mock Trial World Championship in NYC in the fall. We meet starting the first week in July and work throughout the summer to prepare for an event that helps create effective 21st-century learners. The students speak extemporaneously throughout the competition about the impact of chemicals on our environment because of the fact pattern, which consists of the fact that a construction company allowed a condominium complex to be built on ground containing Trichloroethylene contamination.

The trip will allow our students to network with other students from all over the world.

This event will help our students sharpen their persuasive speaking skills through analyzation of a fictitious fact pattern to pick pertinent information and formulate a strategy on a position. This year's case deals with environmental contamination on a construction site that affected the inhabitants of the community. The team will take the roles of plaintiff and defense lawyers competing on a national level with students from all over the world.
