This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Helping students learn to see the world through the eyes of another person is a powerful step toward developing empathy and critical thinking. We will start off with real-world experiences with our local children's hospital. This will help students connect emotionally and intellectually with people from diverse backgrounds.
We will use the cards and stamps to write a letter to children in the hospital so they can be friends and support those who are ill.
I know how lonely a child patient can be in a hospital room so receiving a friendly note can make all the difference in the world.
Teaching students to work toward alleviating suffering in others involves more than just encouraging kindness. We will build empathy by real-world and service learning projects where they will organize a drive where each patient receives a soft teddy bear, socks, clothing, cars, bracelets, and a card.
Measuring student understanding will be done by self-assessments where they write about how it might feel if they were in the hospital, and a self-assessment after they send the care packages and cards, and get a reply back from the patient.
