Empathy Evolved: Nurturing Compassion through Books and Play

My Project

Preschoolers, especially those with special needs sometimes need a little extra help to develop empathy and compassion. Two awesome tools in this journey of learning are books like “Kindness Is My Superpower” and cooperative games like “Peaceable Kingdom” games. Through these books and games, preschoolers not only gain valuable cognitive skills but also develop their social and emotional skills like empathy and compassion.

Books such as “Sometimes I Need” and “The Rabbit Listened” serve as windows to different worlds, allowing children to see life through the eyes of diverse characters.

Whether it’s exploring the challenges faced by a young animal in the forest or understanding the character struggling with emotions, books allow children to step into someone else’s shoes which helps expand their capacity for compassion.

Cooperative games provide preschoolers opportunities to develop teamwork skills, communication, and empathy as they support each other and work towards a common goal. Whether it’s building a tower together with Magnetic Cubes or simply playing catch with a beach ball these games and toys teach preschoolers the value of cooperation, sharing, and helping.

Success in fostering compassion among preschoolers will be measured through observation. We will observe the children for changes in children’s behavior, such as increased instances of sharing, comforting others, and showing kindness. Additionally, role-play activities will help us determine the children’s understanding of empathy and their ability to demonstrate compassion.
