Help me give my students the novel Long Way Down by: Jason Reynolds!
My students are eleventh and twelfth grade English Language Arts students. They attend a school in a high-needs, inner-city district in New York state. The school is located in an urban community with a high rate of poverty. Our district is low on resources and as a result, many supplies need to be purchased by individual teachers. My students are eager and interested in learning new things, yet our district's lack of resources hold the students back from learning to their full potential and becoming as engaged in English education as they could be.
My goal is that the students become a community of independent learners and help push each other to grow.
I do my best to teach my students through many different learning styles. We use hands-on tools, technology, books, videos, and more. We work in partners and small groups regularly, and students really work together to help each other be successful. My students come from a variety of home situations, which helps them learn academic and social skills during my English Language Arts class.
My students are hard working, motivated, future leaders who need more diversity in their curriculum to help teach empathy and compassion while creating a dialogue that is imperative to the current culture.
It is essential to grasp the attention of this generation and let them get lost in pages of a book instead of the wheel of endless Netflix and Hulu series.
The right book, the right author can make this happen.
I will be able to take this book and show students that reading is not intimidating and that there are books with protagonists that look like them, think like them, and face the same obstacles in life that they face. As Jason Reynolds said in an interview with NPR, this book gives kids "no excuse to not read the book".
The ultimate goal of reading this book is to hook my students into reading, discovering a new author who writes relevant works for them and to allow them to see poetry and prose in a way that is not antiquated to their lives.
