Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My middle school students live in a large, urban district where over 85% come from economically disadvantaged households. I teach health and science to seventh and eighth-graders. The students are as diverse as the city we live in. They come from all over the city to attend our STEAM magnet, but they are united in their goals.

My Project

William Kamkwamba's memoir describes how his drive and imagination solved his family's struggles dealing with the severe drought in his Malawi village. My 8th grade science classes center on engineering and problem solving for real life scenarios. Students will not only empathize with the family, but relate to exploring science concepts to design solutions. Students will build their literacy and writing skills as they read the novel.

Students will better understand the saying "necessity is the mother of invention." After we finish the novel, students will be tasked with a design and engineering project connected to the novel - building a windmill with the random objects in our school maker space.

I know my students will connect with this novel as it opens their eyes to struggles and possibilities just waiting for their input.
