I work in an amazing art integrated public school in Kentucky. Our students audition and are accepted into our school for creative and performing arts. This makes for a very unique and wonderful teaching and learning environment. Though all our students have the commonality of being identified as talented in their focus arts areas, we have a diverse population of students with a wide range of academic interests and abilities that come from all over our city.
My students are highly motivated and hardworking children-Because of their diverse educational backgrounds, they have all had different scientific and math experiences, but providing engaging and motivating hands-on experiences and online tools in the lab allows all my students the ability to teach and learn from one another and achieve success.
Students get an insider's view of how engineers apply mathematical skills and scientific knowledge to solve problems. In my classroom, we think and wonder, wonder and think, each and every day. It is my intention to create 21st-century thinkers and problem solvers.
My Project
We are entering our new school year online/remotely. Our newest students, our fourth graders, will have to transition to our school from their elementary schools virtually. I want to support their emotional and social well-being by providing them with back to school stress relief kits that incorporate back to school lessons in science that will help us build community. In these kits, students would receive a small LEGO building kit for remote team builds, a journal with pencil to take on outdoor observation walks, a stress toy, and Kleenex.
Isolation can also undermine many of the instructional strategies that we take for granted in our classrooms- Group work, class discussion and collaborative activity can disappear from the program entirely if we aren’t careful, and with them, go the associated levels of student engagement and rich learning that those experiences provide.
With these kits, I hope to engage students as well as make them feel welcomed into our school community. My hope is that these kits will have a positive impact on my students’ mental and emotional wellness, by connecting them with others and also giving them creative and tactile outlets for stress.
