Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
California is facing record droughts and research suggests the conditions will only become worse in the future. Reducing emissions that affect the drought takes special skills in emerging technologies. This also drives innovation, create jobs, and keeps the nation competitive in the global market.
Our school is in a town near Los Angeles with high poverty and only low-paying jobs available for those without skills in technology.
We are at a continuation high school where students attend because they are behind in credits and in danger of not graduating. My science class has no running water and 6 portable lab desks on one side of the classroom. Despite these difficulties, we do lots of activities and our students succeed in classes and make-up credits to graduate.
California is a global leader in clean energy investments and has alternative energy in areas such as wind turbines, solar, geothermal, biopower and hydroelectric. There are increasing numbers of jobs in the emerging energy fields but, to go beyond basic entry level jobs, they require college with emphasis is science.
Young people from low socioeconomic areas usually go on to low paying jobs, continuing the cycle of poverty. Education and career training with science skills can help break this cycle of poverty.
My Project
The Emerging Technologies project will focus on engineering concepts and practices in line with the Next Generation Science Standards. They emphasize hands-on activities because students learn by not just reading but doing labs that show the concepts. This project allows students to fill in gaps in their understanding of science concepts while solving authentic problems that are essential to our planet.
The kit includes alternative energy in geothermal, hydroelectric, biofuels, solar, wind and new battery technologies. Student teams will design, build, and test emerging energy devices in teams. This gives them the opportunity to learn to work in groups and strengthen their critical-thinking and creative problem-solving skills as wells as reflect on the performance and what they could do to improve it.
Increasing students’ understanding of the basic processes and principles of scientific thinking through NGSS & STEM, not only changing how students learn but possibly changing lives.
The Emerging Technologies project has students increasing their understanding of new energy technologies as well as providing hands-on activities in basic science and engineering skills.
This will give my high poverty students a chance to learn concepts that will prepare them for college and gain skills used in careers in the high paying alternative energy fields. Hopefully, this also raises awareness of alternative energies and increases acceptance to begin to create a more green future!
