I am a Content Coach at a culturally diverse school in Saint Paul, MN. Our school serves over 600 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5. We have a Language Academy (LA) program, which is designed for new immigrant students, some of which may have limited or interrupted formal education. We take pride in being a community school, which connects our students and their families with a wide variety of helpful resources.
Our school provides students with rigorous academics, featuring vocal and instrumental music education, while building family and community partnerships in a welcoming environment that together will inspire future leaders.
96.5% of our students are students of color, 88.4% of our students qualify for free/reduced priced lunch, 13.5% of our students receive Special Education services, and 58.2% of our students are English Language Learners.
My Project
My school is in need of additional high-quality fiction and nonfiction texts, which are appropriate for readers at the emergent stage (Levels A-C). These books will be added to our school's book room where teachers can access them for creating browsing boxes.
Browsing boxes provide students with opportunities to explore a variety of texts within and beyond their independent reading levels.
Students explore browsing boxes individually, in partnerships, or in small groups during Reader's Workshop.
"Children who develop strong skills at the emergent stage establish a rock-solid foundation for future reading success" (Richardson, 2016). Your donation will provide emergent readers with resources to practice and reinforce the critical skills they need to become proficient readers.
