This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with an amazing group of enthusiastic and energetic third-grade students. They are creative, clever, and inquisitive. Their curiosities range from wanting to know more about the history of the San Francisco Earthquake, to animal adaptations, to asking questions about artists’ lives.
Their drive is amazing and it inspires me to meet the challenge to answer their numerous questions.
My students live in a densely populated urban area where many of their families live below the poverty line, and resources are limited. They are primarily English Language Learners in which Spanish is the primary language spoken in the home.
My Project
I am requesting 26 copies of the book El Deafo by Cece Bell. El Deafo is the story of a girl with disabilities feeling alienated because of her differences. The book covers themes such as friendship and acceptance. It teaches how to overcome any obstacle even with physical limitations as well as accepting each person’s uniqueness and individuality.
Students will use these books to participate in read alouds, literature circles, independent reading, and exploring various themes through class discussions.
We will discuss issues such as empathy, kindness, perseverance, and acceptance, and how we can make a positive difference in the world through our own actions. Please help my students get their own copy of this inspirational and uplifting story!
"We lose ourselves in books, we find ourselves there too."
