Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

AP class begins with the teacher asking, "What should we be talking about today?" This question, based on students' nightly reading, promotes student responsibility and proactive inquiry. By the time of the AP Exam, students are adept at close reading, analysis, and writing about literature.

Our students are overwhelmingly low-income, neighborhood students in the Southern California area.

Many are second-language learners. However, they are brilliant, caring students full of potential, and many of our graduating students are accepted to top four-year universities. They typically lack access to small classrooms, rigorous expectations, and exposure to the major works of the English language. Thus, our school is promoting critical reading, thinking, and writing to prepare these students to be college-ready. Our school is targeted for intervention since a large number of kids arrive below grade level in many areas. Passing the high school exit exam is still a problem for some students, many of whom have only been in the United States for two or three years. Thus, though disadvantaged in many ways, these students can learn and want to succeed, and the rigorous skills of the Advanced Placement class will help these students to be able to succeed.

My Project

My syllabus utilizes Toni Morrison's book Beloved to perform a close textual analysis of fiction based on the historical context of slavery in America. The story is rich in symbolism, themes, imagery, and other narrative skills. Students will engage in close reading, analysis of literary devices, timed and extended writing prompts, quizzes, and ultimately a mock trial. Students will learn about the degrading and inhumane practice of American slavery on a personal level and understand the implications of such a system on the human psyche and the development of the U.S. Students will be able track and understand the nuances of multiple narrative voices in the storytelling. They will also recognize and write about themes of sacrifice, human depravity and degradation, family, humanity, redemption, desperate choices, and love. This book's language is particularly powerful, so students will be able to evaluate and explain the effect of the language on the overall message.

My students will appreciate the effects and legacy of slavery on Americans as a whole, but particularly on African Americans, and African American women specifically.

This story will propel students towards a greater commitment to social justice, understanding, and appreciation of the historical struggles of minorities. Importantly, they will benefit by reading a Nobel prize winner who is a Black American woman, to recognize that the literary canon is inclusive and enriched by minority voices.
