Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with "Amazing" 1st -3rd grade students on developing their reading and comprehension skills. However, "AMAZING" only goes so far when funding is low and resources are limited.
My students need a variety of multicultural books that are not only fun and engaging, but will support their learning.
I want my 1st -3rd grade students to continue come to school everyday anticipating learning new and exciting information. They are kind, hardworking, and have persevered through many of the situations they live through on a daily basis. Unfortunately, poverty in our area is a constant issue that we face. My students attend school in an urban school district located in South Central Los Angeles. Currently, more than 80 percent of the students attending our school qualify for a free or reduced lunch.
My Project
My students are like sponges, absorbing everything they see and hear. So, it only makes sense that I incorporate diversity and acceptance when they are most likely to take it in. Research has shown the best way to increase reading and comprehension skills is to read more. These books will help my students to continue to strengthen their reading skills as well as to learn about diversity and inclusion.
Each book placed in my library is presented to students as a treasure and all of these books have been chosen to reflect the students I teach as well as other cultures.
In addition, these books will be used to teach lesson on diversity and inclusion and my students will be able to read these books independently at school and/or at home, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time at their level. In working with my students, I have noticed they enjoy being read to as well as selecting books they have an interest to read during independent reading time. This project will greatly help to enrich their experiences with the print.
