Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

On a typical day in my classroom, you will notice my students using their hands, turning to talk to collaborate with their partners, and repeating what I say a lot because of Whole Brain Teaching! Not only do I want my students to collaborate but I also want them to be successful independently.

My students live in the heart of Chicago.

They have tremendous hearts and an incredible desire to learn and be on the road to college and career readiness! They come from low-income households and attend a school that enrolls 97.4% low-income families. Funding is extremely limited within our district. With that said, I will do everything I can to give my students' the education they deserve!

My Project

As stated above, my students are given amazing opportunities to collaborate with their table partners and groups. I would love to give my students just as many opportunities to learn independently through the use of literacy and mathematics centers. The magnetic classroom letters set is the perfect option for students to work independently building words as well as sentences, which are key skills in their education. The addition and subtraction machine will also be used independently during mathematics centers. I will be beginning mathematics centers this year which will be implemented for 30 minutes each day. The Meet the Common Core Standards Learning Center for Grade 1 will also be implemented during mathematics centers for 30 minutes each day. Students will be able to choose what they would like to work on based on Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Numbers and Operations in Base Ten, Geometry, and Measurement and Data with the hands-on kit.

For many, mathematics is not a favorite subject.

I hope to open my students' horizons to mathematics allowing them to embrace it in first grade and on. My classroom will be improved because I will be implementing mathematics and literacy centers in a systematic and organized approach. Also, our school must see improvement in mathematics instruction and I know that the implementation of centers will be the very best for my kiddies success!
