My Students
My students are second-graders in a small suburban school. My school serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Approximately one-third of the students are English Language Learners. A high percentage of the students qualify for free breakfast and lunch, and many of them receive free backpack food for weekends from a special program.
My students are active learners who are eager to expand their knowledge and practice new skills.
They learn best when concepts are taught in multiple ways. This helps them better understand abstract ideas. They are deep thinkers and love coming to school and learning new things each day. My students are good at problem-solving, do not give up, and love a challenge.
My Project
One of my goals, as an educator, has been to diversify my classroom library. I would love for my students to be exposed to books where they can see themselves reflected in the characters. I also want them to see and learn more about characters from different cultures and backgrounds. I am aware that growing my library this way will not happen overnight and will always be a work in progress.
I believe it is VITAL that our classrooms do better in terms of representation of diversity in literature.
Multicultural perspectives need to be shared and celebrated in our classrooms. The more we engage our children in meaningful ways and allow them to connect with the stories we share, the more they're engaged with their learning. In a classroom where some students may feel like they're the minority, let us invite them into a classroom where diversity is represented and celebrated, and provide a safe haven to share experiences and stories.
As a teacher, I often use picture books to connect with children and spark conversations. These requested book selections will help to engage the broad range of emotions and needs and heritage of diverse children in our multiracial and multicultural society. I will use these books as a springboard to facilitate class discussions. This will serve as the basis for helping do the work of making the world a safer, more equitable place for all children. Please help me provide this opportunity to my students.
