My students need extra support. Students at this school are hardworking learners. They may come from homes that are struggling. More than three-fourths of them are on free or reduced-price lunch, but that doesn’t stop them from wanting an education. The students are multiracial, including 40% White, 31% Hispanic, 23% Black, 3% Asian, and 3% multi-race. This creates an environment of acceptance and tolerance for all. My challenge is to level the playing field so that students with fewer opportunities are able to compete academically with those who have more opportunities.
Creating learning experiences for these students is the best part of my job; the joy on their faces as they are discovering something new and integrating knowledge into their “personal toolkits” is priceless.
In my learning environment, I endeavor to set them up to win in an environment that is inviting and comfortable. Sometimes, that means school supplies, mending clothing, a band-aid or a kind word. I believe this will not only help the students focus, but will also produce a higher level of work from the student. Teaching these young learners is a privilege.
My Project
As a media specialist, it is my job to provide books for students on all different topics and subjects. As we go back to school in August I want to make sure that our media center has enough books to cover the topics that are arising in the world right now. I want to be able to provide an understanding to students' questions. Young minds absorb everything going on in the world. At our school, I make it a point to promote kindness. We do many projects throughout the year to spread kindness to everyone. We talk about how kindness starts with them.
In an elementary school, it is so important to have kids embrace their uniqueness and embrace others' uniqueness.
How our appearance is what makes each of us unique and special and that we should love that about ourselves and how we should not judge others by their appearance. Our outsides might look different, but on the inside, we are all the same. These books in the project will help support our discussions and hopefully help get a better understanding of how everyone should be treated fairly and with kindness.
