Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher. Our school is located in North Carolina. We have over 200 students in K-8th grades. Thirty-six of those students will be in first grade this year.
About 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of our parents can not afford books for the home. Students take home books from our school and class libraries, but these books must be returned.
I am asking for funding to send a little book home every week for each of the students in first grade. I've chosen a research based reading program called Keep Books. I've used this program before, but because of budget cuts the school will not be able to fund it. Each week the children take home a book with suggested activities in a plastic bag. The children may read their book to a parent, have the parent read to them, or a combination of both. Students earn rewards by completing projects related to their book. Many students are very creative by drawing pictures, making bookmarks, and creating models about the book they read. The projects are displayed in the hallway. After completing 5 books/projects, students will receive rewards. If students complete 10 books/projects, they receive additional rewards. This is a fun way to promote reading and increase parent participation in their child's education.
Information will be collected about the results of the program. I will monitor how many books students read, and ask for parent feedback on the effectiveness of this program. Reading scores are examined each 9 weeks to determine the difference that this program makes.
I am excited about the Keep Books Program. Thank you in advance for your interest in helping a child embrace the value of reading.
