My Students

The 85 fifth and sixth grade students on my middle school team come to school every day enthusiastic and eager to learn. They love their school and their teachers, and I am fortunate to spend my days with them.

Their steady optimism keeps me going as well as puts my own daily challenges in perspective.

Young students are bursting with energy, but recess and physical movement in schools are rapidly disappearing, as schools feel the pressure of not enough time. I want to create a classroom where we can embrace their energy.

My Project

Schools are expected to squeeze more and more areas of learning into a limited number of minutes each day. Many, like mine, gained time by cutting unstructured physical activity to a shocking 10 minutes a day, and the constant fidgeting in class is evidence that kids pay the price for this choice.

Kids need to move, and wobble stools will allow them to do so while still developing their academic skills.

Not only will wobble stools accommodate their energy and need to move, they will eliminate the unpleasant nagging most children endure when told to be still. Embrace the energy!
