This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Seeing is believing! Even as adult learners we are sometimes lost and don't "get it" until we have a visual to help us learn about something new. An Elmo provides a visual opportunity instantly for the whole class to view things together. My students need a chance at that "ah ha moment."
My 4th grade students face many struggles in their lives.
Almost all of them live in poverty in a tough inner city environment. English is a second language for most. Our school is the largest elementary school in the state. Our school struggles financially and is unable to provide what would be considered "basic" resources/supplies in most districts. In spite of all these obstacles, my students are a great group of children. They come to school every morning curious and eager to learn. They understand that they need school to get ahead and want so badly to succeed.
My Project
An Elmo would be such an amazing tool to use with my students! It would open doors in every subject area. Visuals are so important to all of us, but especially for my students because they are 2nd language learners. They may not have the vocabulary to understand something, but once they see it... ah ha! After doing that science experiment in small groups, with seedlings, crayfish, circuits , you name it: we could all look at one together on the screen (magnified and also saved on disc to use later when we review)and discuss/explore it more. In math students can share their work without having to waste time rewriting on the board or overhead. What could be richer learning than students sharing, explaining and justifying their work?!In any subject I can show that map, photograph, poem or piece of text on the spot to give students a visual connection to what we are learning about.
My students have so little.
They deserve to have the best possible learning environment complete with tools, like Elmo to help them. They want to succeed and I want to make sure they get every possible chance to. I know that the use of Elmo would have an amazingly positive impact on my student's learning. Thank you so much for considering my proposal and wanting to make a difference in the lives of others!
