Do you remember struggles with learning math or different subjects? The students in my class come into the school year, on average, 3-4 grades below in their math skills. These special education students are often taught one way, without considering their ability and desire to achieve!
These special education students are students craving success in a school known for being last place in the state.
They have the ability and desire to learn and succeed, but they just need to be enticed with creative lessons and catered to as they have a range of different learning styles. Although math at the school, has the lowest passing rate, the students this year have grown tremendously in their passing rates compared to years before! They are itching to do better and higher level work, and I like to include visual learning and projects that allow them to see things from a real-world perspective. They want learning that is relevant!
My Project
These special education math students are creative and innovative thinkers who want math to be applicable to their communities, lives and families. A document camera (aka Elmo) would bring to life math problems that students do so that they can take ownership and be proud of their math completion steps, as well as allow them to re-teach the steps to their peers. The document camera will allow students to check their work, a very important math and life skill. The speakers will allow students to complete project-based math, including creating songs, skits and poems that can be created, recorded and played for different periods of classes. There is no existing math curriculum or textbook at the school and this document camera and speakers can play an integral role for students to learn math more visually and take more ownership of their learning.
Donations to this project will make a world of difference to these students, because right now, there is no curriculum or textbook being supplied for math.
These students need to learn that math is important and valued, and by supporting this project, it will show students that someone does care about math and that they learn and succeed in it! Especially in a high poverty school, these resources show students that their learning is valued.
