This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students are always working with groups and discussing mathematics during class with each other through speaking and writing. To better this experience for students and to build positive disposition towards mathematics, I would love to share students' work on the document camera.
99% of students in my school receive Free and Reduced Lunch service, and 99% of students are also minorities coming from mid-low to low socioeconomic level.
However, many students in the school are motivated and driven to go to a four-year university. They take pride in the fact that they are in school to receive the education they deserve. They are proactive students who use both e-mail and Edmodo to constantly message me asking for help when homework is too difficult. They also are responsible students that contact me prior to absences or post-absences to make sure they know what they missed and make-up their work.
My Project
We will be sharing our work with each other and going over not only strong reasoning for problems but also over common mistakes using this document camera. We will go over mistakes in class to learn from those mistakes and how we can avoid making common mistakes that people make (i.e. forgetting to change the sign, incorrect order of operations). I wish to create positive disposition toward mathematics for my students, as many of them have either failed or barely passed previous math classes. Some students have informed me that they would rather have me give them formulas and have them do practice problems because they are afraid of sharing ideas with each other. I wish to build confidence in students so that they are willing to be proactive, ask questions, and make mistakes to learn from.
Students will be more open to taking risks in mathematics during classroom time to learn from them.
I too, was once afraid of making mistakes, and I wish to help students not be afraid of making mistakes in mathematics during practice. It will improve my classroom by helping students develop a positive disposition toward mathematics. I hope that it will also help students become more outspoken about their thoughts not just in class, but outside of class so that their ideas be shared to the world.
