My Project

As a new ESOL Educator, I need a way to communicate with my students and parents and they need a way to communicate with me. We don't have many staff members available for translating and Google Translate can only take us so far. Students who are learning English often find themselves at a disadvantage in my small groups. Students struggle to work at the same pace as others without losing the chance to be part of the conversations. In addition, the ability to work independently is fundamental in terms of metacognition, confidence, and engagement. Internet translators are often incorrect and require a computer, not always available, for access. By the time we have moved on to another part of the lesson, the students are still struggling with online translators. Plus, using a computer when other students are not, sets them apart as different and can make them feel self-conscious.

My ELL students deserve the same access to quality instruction without the worry of a language barrier.
