Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I have 32 wonderful fifth grade students. They have a desire to learn and a passion to read. In our classroom they learn to expand their thinking with reading, writing, and U.S. History. As a teacher, I try to create as many real world experiences and lessons as much as I can.
The students in our school come from all different types of economic and family backgrounds.
75% of the students in my class speak a second language. It is important to me to expose them to new opportunities as often as I can.
My Project
75% of the students in my classroom speak a second language. It is important for students to always be reading and a quarter of my class speaks only Spanish. These books will give these students access to reading in their native language.
Throughout the school day we spent at least 45 minutes of reading.
Some of the time is for enjoyment and another portion of the time is to help learn and apply new skills. Students who come into the classroom who cannot speak English need access to books as well. A few of my students have been without schooling for a few years and have lost their passion for reading. Bringing these popular titles into the classroom in their native language will help to foster a love for learning.
