My students need 20 copies of the novel, Touching Spirit Bear, for their reading unit. My students are English Language Learners and need a text below grade-level, but with themes they can relate to.

My Students

Students whose first language is not English need some extra support, and one of the biggest challenges is getting them engaged in reading English-language texts. Finding and integrating a text appropriate to their level and attitude is essential to improving their reading skills.

We are fortunate to live on the beautiful island of O'ahu, in Hawaii.

Like almost all schools in Hawaii, our student population is quite diverse, with a mix of many ethnic backgrounds. With such a large population of families who are from other countries, the need for English Language instruction becomes even more critical. My students are kind and capable, and interested in learning. They are often shy and self-conscious about their language abilities, and helping them gain confidence is one of my main goals when teaching.

My Project

Using this text, Touching Spirit Bear, students will learn about the elements of narrative, plot structure, figurative language, and other important literary concepts. They will also explore the themes of challenge and personal growth as they follow the protagonist on his long physical and emotional journey.

Students can never have too much help in developing the skills they will need as adults, and English Language Learner students in particular have need of some extra resources in order to succeed.

Donations allow for fewer compromises and less frequent omission in the curriculum, and allow our children to learn and improve to their full potential.
