Eliminating Food Waste in Schools by Creating Soil

Help me give my students the items needed to compost food waste from the school cafeterias. Students conducted a study determining the amount of waste. That waste will be used to create soil for the greenhouse.

My Project

The items provided by this project will complete a teaching unit that will benefit the district, and environment for years to come. The project started during a food science class when the topic was food waste. Students mentioned that a lot of food seems to be thrown away during lunch. A science experiment was created to monitor how much food was being thrown away during the lunch periods of the junior high and high school since they share the same cafeteria. At the end of the experiment, it was calculated that the percent of food waste (thrown away by students) was 53%. This waste ends up in the local landfill.

Students wanted to be environmentally responsible and turn the food waste into soil by utilizing a food recycling compost bin.

A compost bin will be purchased for the junior/senior high school, along with a bacterial accelerator. An additional food recycling composting bin will be purchased for the elementary school to compost their food waste.

Students conducted a valid science experiment and offered a solution to the problem. They noticed food waste. Calculated the amount of food waste. Then students offered a solution to eliminate the waste from being put in the landfill by composting it into usable soil. This is a win, win for the school district and the environment!
