My Students
The majority of my students come from low-income households. Many receive little to no help from parents for school supplies or moral support for school work. I have two classes of freshmen, each with about 25 students, at the College Preparation level. Almost all of my students fall into the category of low-income.
Without help from generous donors, my students may be severely lacking in terms of supplies needed for school.
My students need access to literature outside of their textbooks.
My Project
As a new teacher with limited resources, I am attempting to acquire class sets of novels. This novel is relatively short, so it keeps the interest of students, but also contains a rich narrative of tolerance, courage, and perseverance. The novel is non-fiction, a memoir, which is a genre that students do not often access in English Language Arts classrooms in novel form. It also allows for rich cross-curricular learning and discussion to occur. I have also included book plates in this project to help ensure the books stay in my classroom for years of use.
This novel is versatile in that it can be taught in a number of different grade levels and touches on many themes that are useful in the English Language Arts classroom.
