Our students are ready and willing to take on the challenges of STEM content. They have many diverse styles of learning and need to experience STEM curriculum beyond the traditional lecture. They need exposure to 21st Century learning resources and hands-on materials. They need to collaborate with their peers and learn how to take the lead during STEM topic discourse. Research has shown that long-term memory is enhanced through simulations of the real experiences. So let's give them real world experiences in STEM!
We are 95% African-American, 2% Haitian-American, 2% Hispanic and 1% Caucasian with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Our school is located in the inner city of Miami, Florida. Although, our students are faced with many socio-economic challenges, they seek a high quality education to become productive citizens.
My Project
We are committed to equipping our students for STEM by building a solid foundation in mathematics concepts. Our students will build base-ten, place value and operations fluency through hands-on activities. The place value disks and flip charts will aid in building conceptual understanding. The base ten sliders will assist in mastery of the value of the digits.
The notebooks, sheet dividers, and place value disks/ base 10, hands-on manipulatives will ensure that our students master and retain key math concepts necessary for real-world STEM activities.
All of these resources will help our teachers reduce the barrier of students not having the proper tools for completing their classwork. This aids in maximizing student learning and the use of instructional time.
