Every day we utilize the strategy of paired reading as part of our literacy block. My students need practice building fluency and this strategy is backed by research that shows an increase in fluency. These books will help my students to each have a "part" to read during partner reading time.
My 14 students are inner city first graders that are anxious and eager to learn.
We have a high energy classroom where we are actively involved in learning all day. School is their safe zone where they are free to try new things and learn from their mistakes. We do not have a budget to purchase the materials we need to help our students to be successful. We use the strategy of partner reading every day and it is a research-based fluency strategy. These books are written specifically for partner reading.
My Project
These books are very popular with first graders and they love to choose a character and play that part while reading with a friend. We will be able to partner read with our same age peers and our older student partners. We can practice these books and do a partner read aloud to our kindergarten and special ed classes. These books can also be checked out to take home to read with parents, siblings or other family members. These books will build reading confidence and help to teach them to work together. It will also help them learn to get in front of an audience and show their awesome reading skills. They will be able to be the example for others of what a "good reader" sounds like. This will be an exciting and empowering opportunity for my first graders!
Donations to this project will provide my students with appropriate partner reading books that are written at their level.
We will use these books daily in school and also at home. Using these books will increase their reading abilities greatly. Their confidence will soar when they present their paired reading to others. The students will be excited about reading and sharing their skills with others.
