My Students
My students are creative, caring, and eager to learn. Although my students come from different backgrounds, many of them face struggles stemming from systemic racism and poverty. These struggles not only make distance learning difficult, but make having consistent access to basic art supplies extremely difficult for parents and caregivers.
Our district has announced that we will remain virtual through Fall 2020, and making sure my students have access to art supplies while working from home is my top priority.
Students, perhaps now more than ever, need to be able to make art to process their changing world, and many students depend on the art supplies provided to them at school to create meaningful artworks. Providing those materials while students are out of our building is essential.
My Project
300 artist sketchbooks will be given to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Students will explore a series of sketchbook prompts throughout the school year that will not only teach art education fundamentals, but will more importantly encourage students to process their experience distance learning in the year 2020.
Because students will not have access to paint, ceramics, fibers, or printmaking, having a real artist sketchbook will help students feel like they are still engaging in real art-making practices while working from home.
Basic drawing and writing supplies will be supplied by my school district, and I will still be working with students online and through Google Classroom.
Although this year will be be very different, I am still so excited to work with my AMAZING kiddos and help them put their imaginations into color, shape, and line on paper. Thank you.
