Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This school year, I've been leading an after-school yoga class to provide students with healthful exercise and a means of relieving stress. Students ranging from eight to twelve years old have joined the class which is held once a week.
It's not easy being a child these days, and I can see how simply practicing one hour after school helps these young people cope.
In fact, according to Natalie Nevins, DO, a board-certified osteopathic family physician, “Yoga can be very effective in developing coping skills and reaching a more positive outlook on life.”
Our yoga class seems to be growing a loyal core group of participants. Some are interested in releasing stress after school. Others want to learn to practice yoga. Ultimately, they all enjoy the savasana relaxation at the end of class.
It would be better, though, if we had some standard props such as mats, blankets and blocks.
My Project
I'd like to continue leading an after-school yoga class with the standard props students need to realize the healthful benefits of the practice.
Until now we've been using boxes containing books as props!
Real blocks would certainly be more stable. In addition, my students could use standard yoga props such as blankets, straps and bolsters (my school already has mats which we can use).
I believe yoga can help young people--and all people--live in this world with greater serenity. As a Kripalu-certified yoga instructor, and a 19-year practitioner, I believe I may be able to help my students do that.
Please help provide the props these young people need to stretch and get stronger for physical and mental health.
