This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Yoga supports student learning by teaching them self-confidence, health and wellness, character education and mindful awareness. Yoga provides students a way to recognize and balance their emotions, provides understanding being in the present-- required for teaching and learning!

My students are elementary aged students (K-2) from Southwest Denver, an under-served population of children who deserve better from and for their communities.

Most of my students are learning English, qualify for the free lunch program and are so excited for their FIRST year of Physical Education which includes yoga, outdoor education and a standards based SPARK P.E. curriculum. We are a Title I, college prep charter school that serves all students and families who want to come to our school. These students are active, engaged and driven and I want to provide them with the tools they need to be successful and feel connected to their learning.

My Project

A portion of the Physical Education program will consist of yoga postures, meditation, breathing techniques and character development. To have yoga mats would provide my students the excitement of having quality equipment and also allow them to recognize and honor their own space and that of their peers. Having colorful yoga mats that coincide with their colors from the general education classroom as well as the P.E. classroom with aid in classroom management to provide more time for learning and engaging in the postures and lessons that we learn through a yoga practice.

This project will make a difference in the hearts, minds, and bodies of our elementary school students by providing them high quality equipment.

By participating in our Physical Education programs yoga practice our students will learn lessons of the body and mind which will trickle into their learning in the general education classroom as well as their families and communities. Positive character development, emotional control techniques, and physical strength and wellness are essential in P.E.
