I am a music teacher for students in grades K-8 in the south side of Chicago. In music classes students create music, dance, perform, sing, and study historical and theoretical elements of music. All children are enthusiastic about actively participating in music, but the school only has a limited supply of instruments. Renting or purchasing an instrument for a child is not an option for many families. The school I teach at has only 4 violins for student use. I hope to obtain many more violins for the students at our school. My goal is to develop a flourishing string program in the school based on the string pedagogies of Shiniki Suzuki and Paul Rolland. I would like to develop an after school string program for students in grades 3-8. In this program students would play on an instrument borrowed from the school for the course of their enrollment in the program. Students would be responsible for the safety of the instrument while in their care, and they would bring the instrument home to practice. As the musical skill of students develops, students would have the opportunity to perform as a group and soloists at appropriate school functions in the community. For this proposal, Elementary School Strings- Part 2, I am requesting four full sized violins and bows. This proposal will provide an additional 4 budding violinists with instruments, it will lay down the foundations of a string program, and it will generate interest in other students who may choose to join the program in the future. Thank you for your interest and consideration.
