Elementary Readers

My Students

My students have a love of reading. They want to read daily and improve their reading skills. Guided Reading books on their level will help them improve their reading skills.

I have 21 second graders. They live in the urban district of where the majority of families are struggling to make ends meet. Many of the students don't have family members who are able to help with homework. They are eager students who have a love of learning.

The community has high rates of poverty crime and violence. Our school has a low-achieving student population, and the correct materials would help them succeed. Our school implements a Balanced Literacy program and a major part of our literacy is guided reading which allows the students to work on needed skills.

My Project

If we are able to receive guided reading books, students will be able to use the texts on their level to increase their reading fluency, pace, and comprehension. Students will be grouped according to their reading ability. We will spend 20 minutes per group. Groups will consist of five to six students grouped together according to reading ability. The students will be able to use the leveled texts in order to increase reading ability. Students will be seated in a kidney shaped guided reading table and receive individualized teacher attention. The rest of the class will be in literacy centers. Three groups will be called each day. Lowest functioning groups will be called daily.

My students are always saying that their pencils are broken.

An electric pencil sharpener is an asset to my classroom. This will provide sharpened pencils for the students to complete all work.
