My students need headphones to use with iPads while creating videos and other iPad creations. We need supplies to create a Makerspace station. We need books and a shelf for display to encourage inquiry and wonder.
My 2nd grade classroom is a place of challenge and discovery. I work to inspire a growth mindset among this group of budding entrepreneurs, diplomats, scientists, mathematicians, artists and writers. My classroom fosters the 21st century skills of creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking and problem solving.
The diverse cultural backgrounds represented create a rich classroom with a wide variety of learning styles and aptitudes.
My students are eager to explore and learn, and love to create, design and build.
My Project
Creativity is a critical 21st skill. According to Ken Robinson, "Imagination is the source of every form of human achievement. And it's the one thing that I believe we are systematically jeopardizing in the way we educate our children and ourselves.” President Obama has touted innovation as being key to our country's economic success.
By incorporating a Makerspace into my classroom I hope to foster innovation and creative thinking among my students.
They will have the opportunity to create STEAM projects and explore a multitude of ways to show their learning creatively.
I will incorporate creative opportunities across all content areas, by having students do projects such as exploring how to create a marble run in our Force and Motion unit, or creating a representation of what they have learning in an Inquiry based project.
