This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are diverse and eager learners, are motivated to learn the technology and computer science skills that will help them to be successful in a digital world. However, although our students live in the heart of Silicon Valley, many face personal and socioeconomic obstacles that prevent them from fully participating in our modern digital world. School is often the only place our students are exposed to computer science and programming, and for some it is also the catalyst that reengages them in their education.

We are a Title I school, serving 500 students in grades K-5, about 90% of whom participate in the free and reduced lunch program.

75% of our students are English language learners, and 71% of those students speak Spanish as their first language. Although living just down the street from some of the wealthiest tech companies in the world, many of our students live in poverty and do not have access to the technology and training needed to prepare them for the jobs most available in their own neighborhood.

My Project

Coding is a powerful skill for modern students to learn. Our job as educators is to prepare students for life outside of school. In this day and age, that means preparing students for jobs that don't yet exist. We need our students to be critical thinkers and creators. Coding, programming and physical computing with Raspberry Pi introduces students to the world of digital making and prepares them for future careers in technology and engineering fields.

Incorporating tools like PiCameras and Sense Hats into our Raspberry Pi lessons will enhance our cross-curricular STEAM projects, letting students create weather stations, nature cameras, digital voting booths, robots and more.

Providing our low-income students with equitable access to programming and computing topics, and exposing them to digital making and creation projects, will help set them on the path to becoming the next generation of Silicon Valley innovators!
